Professor Nathan Rien, a graduate of Northwestern California University School of Law, is a practicing estate planning attorney and a tenured professor at Columbia College. He also teaches legal analysis, writing skills and exam strategies for Fleming's Premier Bar Tutorial.
Professor Rien received his Juris Doctor degree from Northwestern California University School of Law in 2015. Prior to attending law school, Professor Rien earned his Bachelor of Art degree from the University of California, Davis in Political Science and History in 1999. He then earned a Masters degree in Education from National University (2001), and a Masters in Sport Science from the United States Sports Academy and was named the Academy's 2004 Master's Student of the Year.
In 2012, Rien passed the First Year Law Students Examination (Baby Bar) and in July 2017 he passed the California Bar Examination. In January 2018, Rien was admitted to the State Bar of California and has subsequently opened the Law Office of Nathan C. Rien, an estate planning law practice.
Professor Rien has served as a tenured professor of Health and Human Performance at Columbia College in northern California for the past 14 years, as well as, the Director of Athletics. He was elected Academic Senate President-elect in 2017 and is currently serving as the Academic Senate President. Prior to becoming the Athletic Director, Professor Rien served as the men's head basketball coach at Columbia College for 10 years and as the Associate Athletic Director.
He also wrote the Sport Science Degree program curriculum for Columbia College and has also served on several district and state committees, including Curriculum, Policies and Procedures, Gender Equity, College and District Council. From 2015-2017, Professor Rien led Columbia College through the Accreditation process as the Faculty Co-Chair for Accreditation.
Professor Rien played NCAA college basketball at the University of California, Davis and was part of two NCAC Championship teams. He then went on to teach leadership, United States and World History, and was the head men's varsity basketball (4 years) and tennis (1 year) coach at Oakdale High School. He also served as an assistant men's basketball coach at California State University, Stanislaus for one season.
Professor Rien's teaching expertise at Fleming's Fundamentals of Law is focused on how to apply the law to facts with an emphasis on issue spotting, writing skills and exam strategy. He provides private substantive law and legal exam tutorial services for currently enrolled law students and for bar candidates enrolled in the Fleming's Premier Bar Tutorial bar review. In addition, Professor Rien also brings to Fleming's legal practice skills that he demonstrates and applies in his own estate planning practice on a daily basis.
